And Piglet said to Pooh, “Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would I’d never leave.” ~A.A. Milne
Labor Day might signify the traditional farewell to summer, but to those of us on the island who’ve been working our fingers to the bone, we know differently. I personally think there are many things to love about the end of the summer. Mainly for me, it’s time to get in touch with my inner beach bum! Oh, how I am looking forward to that since I didn’t see much of the beach this summer. I sit and ponder my favorite things about the season called indian summer, as the very thought of them creates sort of a poetry for my soul. So refreshing. . . walking over the dune and seeing an almost empty beach. . . the seagulls are quiet. . . the ocean is like bathwater. . . staying in until I’m a prune. . . leaving the beach at sundown. . . sitting on the porch swing and hearing no noise, only the music of the ocean. . . finding sand in my pocket. . . admiring all of the shells I collected. . . butterflies abounding. . . that secret fishing spot is a secret again. . . Fall festivals galore. . . having the tram car all to myself. . . knowing everyone you see. . . traffic lights blink. . . could go on and on. I really do love the fall and these really are some of my favorite things about it. I receive so many pieces of mail from Wildwood lovers whose dream in life is to live here forever some day, which makes me love it here even more. The island is beautiful anytime of the year, each season has a beauty all its own.
However, I have to be honest and admit that this year may be a little tough for me after Labor Day. My only child is heading to college and it will be the first time that he will be away from me for that long. (You all know that I have certainly given him wings to fly as I have sent him to South Africa several times for weeks at a time. But he always returned home.) So, instead of me being totally happy that summer is over this year, you may see me on the beach crying buckets of tears. I’m sure, though, that the excitement I feel for him and for all of his friends and classmates as they go out into the big world will bring comfort to this empty nest.
We must give our children roots to grow and wings to soar.
